    People differ greatly in their attitudes towards environmental issues and climate change. To better engage the various groups within society in environmental and climate policy, it is important to understand the differences between them and to take these differences into account in the design of and communication around environmental policies. Using a Latent Class Analysis, data was drawn from the Dutch Longitudinal Internet Studies for the Social Sciences and, in particular, from the PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency’s 2020 survey De balans voor de leefomgeving. That data was used to identify five different groups representing five different public attitudes towards the living environment: problem-deniers, those scarcely involved, those locally involved, those passively involved and those actively involved. There are at least three lessons that those who communicate about environmental policy can learn from this: (1) pay attention to differences in information needs, (2) link environmental issues to people’s perceptions of their immediate living environment, and (3) pay attention to differences in institutional trust.
